In 2007, Dr. Kerr co-founded Nautilus Biosciences Canada. Through Nautilus, Dr. Kerr aims to commercialize some of the applied work conducted in his academic lab at the NRC at UPEI related to the discovery and development of marine bioactive compounds.

Steve oversees the development of crop production and processing operations for the company. Prior to his role at NCI, Steve was the operator of Atlantic AgriTech Inc., a PEI based company providing agricultural and environmental research services throughout Eastern Canada.

Dr. Alaa Abd-El-AzizBack to Top ^
President, The University of Prince Edward Island
Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz assumed his responsibilities as the sixth President and Vice-chancellor of the University of Prince Edward Island on July 1, 2011. Dr. Abd-El-Aziz received his BSc and MSc degrees from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, and his PhD from the University of Saskatchewan.

Economic Development Officer, City of Charlottetown
Ron Atkinson is the Economic Development Officer for the City of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He is a graduate of Acadia University, Wolfville, N.S. and before his position with the City of Charlottetown, he spent 16 years in the private sector in varied positions in the aerospace, chemical manufacturing, and food service industries.

Natural Health Products Program Leader, National Research Council of Canada
Along with being a Researcher for Aquatic and Crop Resource Development at the National Research Council Canada, Dr. Chapman also leads NRC’s national program on Natural Health Products. Dr. Chapman joined NRC in 2005 from Predicant Biosciences in San Francisco, California, where he served as Senior Scientist.

Vice-President, ACOA PEI and Tourism
Pat Dorsey was appointed Vice-President of ACOA Prince Edward Island and Tourism in January 2007.
Before joining ACOA, Mr. Dorsey worked in leadership roles with the Government of Prince Edward Island, including seven years as Senior Policy Advisor to the Premier.

Associate Director Research, Development and Technology Transfer (ADRDT) AAFC - Science and Technology Branch (STB)
Mark Grimmett was appointed as the Associate Director Research, Development and Technology Transfer for the Charlottetown Research and Development Centre in September 2016.  Prior to this, he worked as an Analytical Chemist operating the AAFC Regional Analytical Laboratory in Charlottetown.

Ron holds a B.B.A. degree from University of Prince Edward Island, LL.B. and MBA degrees from Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS. He is a professional Chartered Accountant and a partner with the Atlantic Canadian law firm, Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales. Ron is the former CEO of BioVectra Inc. – PEI’s largest biotechnology companies and past Chair of the PEI BioAlliance.

Vice President of Research
Dr. Debbie Plouffe is the Vice President of Research for the Center for Aquaculture Technologies Canada (CATC).  Dr. Plouffe is a molecular and cell biologist with a strong background in fish immunology and fish health. She received her undergraduate (1999) and doctoral (2005) degrees from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and held a post-doctoral fellowship at the NRC in Halifax for two years where she developed DNA-vaccines for Atlantic salmon.

Executive Director, National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP), Atlantic and Nunavut region
Grant is the Executive Director of the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) for the Atlantic and Nunavut region. He joined NRC in 2016. Prior to joining NRC IRAP, Grant was Vice President Global Delivery with CGI, leading the Atlantic Global Delivery Center and overseeing a large staff serving Canadian and international clients.

Melanie is a proud Islander from Milton, Prince Edward Island. She graduated from Holland College’s Graphic Design Program in 1992 before moving to Western Canada to pursue her career. She returned to Prince Edward Island in 2015 to launch Nutracelle, which is manufactured in PEI. She is excited to be a part of the growth, innovation and entrepreneurship happening in Prince Edward Island today.
