Russell Kerr (Chair)

In 2007, Dr. Kerr co-founded Nautilus Biosciences Canada. Through Nautilus, Dr. Kerr aims to commercialize some of the applied work conducted in his academic lab at the NRC at UPEI related to the discovery and development of marine bioactive compounds.  Dr. Kerr joined the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Prince Edward Island as a Professor and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Marine Natural Products in August 2006. He received his B.Sc. in chemistry and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Calgary, and subsequently worked as a post doctoral fellow at Stanford University.  Kerr joined Florida Atlantic University in 1991 where he has established a research group in the field of marine natural products.  
The primary goal of Dr. Kerr’s research is to develop sustainable production methods of bioactive marine natural products with applications in human health.  He has more than 80 publications and 6 patents.  He is the recipient of many awards, including the Henry Dreyfus Scholar Award and PEI’s Premier’s Medal of Innovation. He has represented the US on international scientific and working group committees and has also presented at numerous international conferences.
