New Academic Wage-Subsidy Program to Create 1,000 Student Job Opportunities in Canadian Biotech Companies

BioTalent Canada has announced a new initiative to increase job-readiness of post-secondary STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and business students across Canada.  The federally-funded Student Work-Integrated Learning Program will provide $6 million in wage subsidies over four years for 1,000 co-op placements for students to gain work experience in Canadian biotech companies. New Somru BioScience-Radiant Pharmaceuticals joint venture drives PEI export sales

PEI’s Somru BioScience has teamed up with Radiant Pharmaceuticals, a Bangladeshi pharmaceutical powerhouse, in a joint venture that will greatly improve the tools available in Bangladesh for early diagnosis of diseases like diabetes and cancer. The joint venture, expected to create $50 million in export sales over the next five years and add 100 new employees to Somru’s PEI operation, was announced today in Charlottetown.  Read more here.
Celebrity Chef Michael Smith voices support for GMO foods

PEI's own celebrity chef, Michael Smith has come out in support of genetically-modified food at a consultation about Canada's Food Policy. Smith joined federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay at a consultation Wednesday in Charlottetown — the first of five public consultations being held across the country over the next two months. Sekisui completes renovation and announces expansion in PEI

Graham Coll is one of many highly specialized workers who have been drawn to Sekisui Diagnostics both for its fast-growing international reputation and for its Prince Edward Island location. The Ontario native moved to the Island in 2013 to join the bioscience company as a process development scientist, which has allowed him to put his master’s in biotechnology to good use. Today officials from Sekisui Diagnostics joined government representatives to cut the ribbon on a just-completed $6 million renovation and to announce another major expansion, both of which include funding from the provincial government.
