PEI Honeydrop™ Wins Top World Food Prize

PEI Honeydrop™ Wins Top World Food Prize
October 18, 2010, Charlottetown, PE -- PEI’s Honibe Honeydrop™ from Island Abbey Foods Ltd. has won one of the world’s top food prizes. Beating out eight products from other food categories from around the world, the sweet drop of pure PEI honey took home the top award at the SIAL D’Or competition in Paris, France this past weekend.
To reach this level at the SIAL D'Or competition, the Honibe Honeydrops
competed against 300 products from 30 countries.  Likened to the ‘Oscars’ of the food industry, the SIAL D’Or show is the world’s biggest food trade show. In addition to the prestige that comes with winning this kind of award, more than a quarter of a million people have had the chance to see the PEI product on display over the past few days at the Paris Tradeshow.
John Rowe, President & CEO of Island Abbey Foods said the whole process was very exciting and he is currently getting a lot of visits from press from all over the world. “We are incredibly honored to win the Global SIAL d'Or. They gave out the country awards first where we received the "Best in Canada Award" then the category awards were presented and we received our "Best Grocery Sweet" award, and after much suspense they announced Honibe as the Grand Prize winner.  Being chosen as the top prize from over 300 innovations from around the world is very surprising and exciting.  The recognition is amazing for Honibe and for Prince Edward Island."
This is the first time a PEI product has ever been in this competition, giving Island Abbey Foods and its supporters a lot to smile about. Rory Francis, Executive Director of the PEI BioAlliance, and board member of the AgriAlliance said that Islanders should be very proud of the innovation, hard work and business acumen that Honibe's award represents. "John, his internal team, and his external partners should all take a world class bow. And this is just the beginning for this Island company."

Island Abbey Foods is using the SIAL show as their launch into the European market.  This said Rowe will help draw a phenomenal amount of attention to their products and their brand.  The company said they are looking to establish a distribution network throughout Europe with the right partners that will help bring their unique products to their European customers.
Earlier in October, the PEI Company announced its partnership with Dutch Gold Honey, Lancaster, P.A. and their subsidiary McLure's Honey and Maple Products, Littleton, NH to distribute the Honibe brand of pure dried honey products. In August of this year, Island Abbey created the world's first pure honey cough drop for soothing sore throats and relieving coughs, with the HoneyLozenges™ - Nature's Cough Drop, the first pure honey lozenge for upper respiratory therapy on the market. And in May 2010, Island Abbey Foods Ltd. launched its Honey Sprinkles™, with the world's first dried granules of honey for everyday baking in the kitchen.
