Emergence Program Builds On Past Success And Grows Capacity To Support SMEs

Atlantic Canada’s bioscience sector has become a key driver of economic growth and diversification for the region. Made up of research institutions, non-government organizations, private business and government, the Atlantic Canadian bioscience sector consists of approximately 900 organizations that together employ more than 10,000 people.

That is why the Government of Canada is investing to help the PEI BioAlliance support the continued development of small and medium-sized (SMEs) bioscience companies in Atlantic Canada.

Investment ensures continuation of mentorship and commercialization support

Today, Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, announced a non-repayable contribution of $2,350,000 through the Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program to the PEI BioAlliance. The investment will build the capacity of the Emergence Bioscience Business Incubator (Emergence) to deliver resources, mentorship and networking opportunities for SMEs in the sector. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

The Province of P.E.I. is also contributing $825,000 towards the project through Innovation PEI.

This contribution will support Emergence 3.0, the next phase of the virtual incubator program that accelerates the growth of startups and early-stage bioscience companies through one-on-one mentorship, strategy services, networking and resource sharing. This renewed funding for Emergence will build on a successful model managed by a team of experienced staff and volunteer mentors, and foster greater collaboration within the innovation ecosystem in Atlantic Canada. The project is expected to benefit 55 bioscience businesses annually.

Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government of Canada’s commitment to develop a highly skilled workforce and strengthen the region’s bioscience sector to ensure the success and sustainability of the industry.

Natasha Dhayagude’s vision for Chinova is to add value throughout the supply chain. The company upcycles the stems of white button mushrooms, usually thrown away by farmers, to develop Chiber™, their natural, clean-label preservation ingredient. The Motionball PEI committee did an amazing job to successfully organize this event and raise funds for such a wonderful organization. The Special Olympic athletes made the day so special with their energy and spirit!

Motionball 2022 raised $32,000 for Special Olympics PEI! Sekisui Diagnostics had 16 players (two teams) and 7 volunteers join in this event! It was a great day of fun, new friendships, and positivity!

 

The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) officially opens Charlottetown biomanufacturing training facility

The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) today officially opened their new CASTL Biomanufacturing Training Facility located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The new training facility contains state-of-the-art pilot-scale bioprocessing equipment that will allow employees to gain practical skills that are immediately transferable to process scale-up and clean room environments. The facility is equipped with laboratories and classroom spaces built to deliver the highest quality training to industry professionals. With this new facility, CASTL can deliver on-site customized training for entry-level employees through to senior management as well as post-secondary students.

The Charlottetown facility was made possible through a contribution of $2,335,000 from the Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and $800,000 from the Province of Prince Edward Island. CASTL is supported by National Lead Partner adMare BioInnovations and its adMare Academy.

CASTL is the exclusive provider of the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) licensed training programs in Canada. Based in Ireland, NIBRT develops and delivers state-of-the-art training and education programs for the world’s leading biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies.

According to BioTalent Canada’s most recent labour market research, the Canadian bioscience and life science sector will need to hire an additional 65,000 new workers by 2029. CASTL will deliver on the economic demand for individuals who are work-ready to meet the skills and talent needs for Atlantic Canada’s bioeconomy as well as Canada’s fast-growing biomanufacturing sector.

Earlier this year, with support from the Government of Quebec, CASTL announced plans to open a biomanufacturing training facility in Montreal. Additional facility locations within Canada are being considered to ensure broad geographic access to this type of training across Canada.

The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) launches first series of hands-on training courses

The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) has launched their first series of hands-on training short courses to be delivered at the new CASTL Biomanufacturing Training Facility located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. As the exclusive provider of the National Institute of Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) curriculum, CASTL will deliver theoretical and hands-on competency-based training.

The instructor-led short courses consist of lectures which are delivered online or in person, enhanced by practical sessions delivered at the CASTL training facility. The facility contains state-of-the-art pilot-scale bioprocessing equipment that allows trainees to gain practical skills that are immediately transferable to process scale-up and clean room environments. It is also equipped with laboratories and classroom spaces built to deliver the highest quality training to industry professionals.

CASTL’s new Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Onboarding Boot Camp, a 4.5-day hands-on training course, introduces the necessary fundamental knowledge and practical operations needed to onboard new employees successfully and prepare them to navigate a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. It includes both hands-on practical training and theoretical knowledge covering good manufacturing practices (GMP), good documentation practices (GDP), gowning, aseptic techniques, and how to operate the common equipment for all jobs in a manufacturing environment.

“Upon successful completion of the course, trainees will be prepared to navigate their way through a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility,” said Paul-Xavier Etter, CASTL’s Director of Technical Training. “The boot camp is designed for onboarding newly hired operators and technical staff as part of their onboarding in a modern biopharmaceutical or bioprocessing facility, as well as an individual working in a supporting role in manufacturing, such as QA auditors.”

Canada’s Food And Biotech Island Just Got Bigger With Chinova Bioworks New Manufacturing Space In The Bioscience Manufacturing Incubator Building On PEI

Chinova Bioworks (Chinova), a Canadian-based natural ingredient company, hit a turning point by expanding its manufacturing space inside the Bioscience Manufacturing Incubator (BMI) on PEI. This milestone was made possible through the company’s partnership with PEI BioAlliance, the operator of the BMI.

Chinova chose to move its manufacturing to the BMI because its state-of-the-art building focuses on sustainability and energy efficiency, which makes them more environmentally and eco-friendly. The new space increases Chinova’s production from pilot scale to 20x their current capacity levels with plans to expand their operational team in PEI. The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), provided a $250,000 repayable contribution for the purchase of manufacturing equipment to help Chinova meet the new production levels available within the Bioscience Manufacturing Incubator. The additional staff and manufacturing capabilities allow the company to expand its client base to larger businesses that can make a prominent footprint in reducing food waste.

The BMI is a newly built 20,000 sq/ft facility operated by PEI BioAlliance, a private sector-led not-for-profit organization dedicated to growing Prince Edward Island’s bioscience industry. The BMI is designed for start-ups to transition from pilot-scale to full production levels while meeting the strict regulatory standards required for producing natural products.

Until this point, Chinova Bioworks was fortunate to have worked from the BioFoodTech facility in Charlottetown. BioFoodTech is a 30-year-old institution providing professional technical services to food and bioprocessing industries. The food grade space allowed Chinova to meet its early production goals, all while in a GMP environment. Chinova’s success highlights the importance of a scale up space prior to moving to BMI.

Co-founders Natasha Dhayagude and David Brown met in 2015 at an entrepreneurship accelerator and incubator center in Fredericton, New Brunswick. There they found a common interest in science and the study of mushrooms. Fast forward to 2016, to the founding of Chinova Bioworks, whose core values are to find sustainable sourcing and innovative ways to reduce food waste through food preservation.

Looking to nature, the company developed a natural and sustainable alternative to artificial preservatives with its white button mushroom extract called Chiber™. Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences names Paul-Xavier Etter as Director of Technical Training

The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul-Xavier Etter as Director of Technical Training.

“With more than 20 years working in biotech and biopharma manufacturing in Canada and internationally, we’re pleased to have Paul-Xavier bring his experience to this important leadership role,” said Penny Walsh-McGuire, CASTL Executive Director. “Paul-Xavier’s passion for developing individuals to enhance their performance and deliver safe medicines to patients aligns with CASTL’s values and our vision to expand our biopharma manufacturing training programs across Canada.”

As a highly skilled senior executive with more than 20 years of industry experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, Paul-Xavier has held roles with Sanofi Pasteur, Medicago, and GlaxoSmithKline. He is experienced in process development, technology transfer, green fields, production in cGMP and GLP environments, and Lean Six Sigma project management standards. He has led multidisciplinary teams as well as large and complex projects from research and development to commercialization.

Over his career, Paul-Xavier has contributed to the commercialization of over a billion doses of vaccines. In recent years, he was at the forefront of the COVID-19 crisis with Medicago and Inventprise. His passion for training individuals was applied in his role with projects in collaboration with the prestigious Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Over the span of his career, he successfully helped drive change and implement new processes internationally. He was an influencer at Sanofi Pasteur Canada to introduce Industry 4.0 in a major capital project.

As CASTL continues to expand hands-on training opportunities across Canada, Paul-Xavier will be responsible for leading operations at the hands-on training facilities in Charlottetown (opening September 2022), Montreal, and future sites. In addition, he will oversee the delivery of the practical and theoretical biopharmaceutical manufacturing training programs and new curriculum development in response to the Canadian industry’s needs.

New Five Year Economic Action Plan Unveiled by the PEI Partnership for Growth

THREE RIVERS, PE/ Today, the PEI Partnership for Growth (PFG) released an action plan that sets out priorities for economic development in the province for the next five years.

The initiative was led by 21 business and industry sector organizations, representing enterprises big and small, and is based on the consultation of over 220 individuals and organizations. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative in PEI and has been supported by the Province of PEI. The Economic Action Plan is designed to be a roadmap for accelerating economic success by recognizing the key enablers of broad-based prosperity and addressing big issues such as workforce and housing shortages, innovation capacity and low average wages.

“Our vision is for PEI to be a leader in entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth, attracting people, technology, and capital to a growing economy where businesses and all Islanders succeed,” said Rory Francis, Interim Chair of Partnership for Growth. “The power of this plan will be in its implementation- strong alignment among business sectors, governments at all levels, and academic and research partners, working together to advance key initiatives,” he said.

“This Economic Action Plan is extremely timely,” said Premier Dennis King. “I want to acknowledge the work of the many individual businesses and sector organizations that contributed to it. The Action Plan represents an unprecedented consensus on what will be necessary to continue our strong pre-pandemic growth and build the Island’s economic prosperity into the future. We only need to look back at the last couple of years to be reminded of the importance of a healthy and resilient economy to our wellbeing as citizens, as a province, and as a country,” the Premier stated.

The action plan research and consultations were conducted in 2019 and 2020 and has been updated to reflect learnings from the pandemic and current economic pressures. Prince Edward Island had 12 years of consistent economic growth prior to the pandemic, and this Action Plan provides both core actions and specific five-year targets that will be used to monitor progress towards the stated goals.

It is truly exciting and motivating to see a plan that we can implement and contribute to that will work to help everyone’s specific needs, as well as the big picture for economic success here on PEI,” said Jason Aspin of Aspin Kemp & Associates, a leader in PEI’s Cleantech sector.

The Plan identifies actions in areas including innovation and sector development strategies, vibrant communities, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and clean growth. Targets to be achieved by 2026 include a 10% increase in GDP, exceeding the national average in employment levels, average hourly wage, and productivity levels, international exports growing by 4% annually, and achieving the highest percentage of high growth businesses in Atlantic Canada.

The PEI BioAlliance launches HR Strategy 2025: Breaking Barriers – Driving Growth

Today, the PEI BioAlliance unveiled a new HR strategy for the province’s bioscience sector. HR Strategy 2025: Breaking Barriers – Driving Growth is the fourth HR Strategy in the history of the PEI bioscience cluster. The strategy focuses on actions to enhance recruitment and retention success, provide HR support to companies, address the talent gap through skills and training development, and increase public awareness and understanding of bioscience career paths.

PEI’s 60 bioscience companies combined have more than 2200 employees, representing 60% growth since 2015. In 2020, the sector celebrated $364 million in sales, $61 million in investment attraction, and $100 million in new equipment and facilities. By 2025, the PEI BioAlliance expects to see those numbers grow to $500 million in sales supported by 3000 employees.

The PEI bioscience business community and its partners have collaborated to grow strong, sustainable organizations that are offering rewarding careers in Prince Edward Island.

The BioAlliance now advertises more than 350 positions each year (up from 100/year in 2018). The breakdown of job categories over the past five years hovers around: 50% production, 20% scientist/research, 15% quality assurance/quality control, and 15% business administration.

“The strategy is built on 16 years of experience and well-tracked key metrics where we can look back and see all that we have accomplished, the strong sector growth, and the opportunities we must capture to keep building a robust community of talent that can match and enable future growth”, said Vivian Beer, HR Strategy Manager, PEI BioAlliance.

Recruitment represents the most comprehensive focus of activities in the Strategy, as it is critical in supporting company growth and in enabling new companies to establish a presence in Prince Edward Island.

To support retention and provide further HR support to companies, the BioAlliance plans to establish an HR Excellence Initiative within the sector focused on advancing HR best practices, support and training which will also serve as an attraction tool for top talent.

The Strategy also speaks to the importance of building public awareness and understanding of bioscience career paths through early engagement with junior high and high schools, an increased digital presence, and local community partnerships such as STEAM PEI and 4-H.

Until recently, there has been limited dedicated bioscience skills and training capacity in the biomanufacturing sector in Atlantic Canada. To address the talent gap, PEI BioAlliance launched the Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) in 2020. The initiative is focused on new skilling, upskilling, and reskilling talent for the bioscience sector across Canada, with particular emphasis on biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

BIOVECTRA, one of the anchor companies in PEI’s bioscience sector, is widening its search for talented professionals. “Our workforce is growing because our company is expanding into mRNA vaccine and therapeutics, so we need talent from a variety of professions. As we recruit our future workforce, CASTL learning is one of the value-added experiences we can offer as an employer to attract talent who want to grow their knowledge and develop hands-on skills for a bright future in life sciences,” says Lester Wood, Vice President of People and Culture at BIOVECTRA.

Other PEI bioscience companies are also expanding and adding jobs, says Beer. “Over 50% of our bioscience companies have advertised positions in the past year. We have established a well-targeted audience of more than 5000 contacts (up 73% since 2015). We consistently attract new contacts to our community/career news audience from across Canada and internationally.”

The new HR Strategy will support other strategic priorities laid out in the PEI BioAlliance 2021-2025 Strategic Plan published in July 2021. These include business attraction, increased sector employment, expansion of vital infrastructure, and achieving international recognition as a leading force in Canada’s Bio-revolution.
